Which service provider to select for the rental, installation and maintenance of post-production equipment during an event ?
During the two weeks of the Paris Salon International de l'Agriculture, France Télévisions covers the event both for the national network channels France 2, France 3 and France Ô and also on the local level for the France 3 regional stations and network overseas first.
The goal is to provide the journalists and their teams coming from all over France with post-production assets right in the heart of the event.
The edited news items are transfered to a production OB van, then broadcast in the various news programmes of the France Télévisions Group (Morning News, 1PM, 7 to 8PM, 8PM News, Soir 3, etc…) both for the National and Regional editions. The delivery of files for the Web streaming service must also be catered for.
Since 2011, the France Télévisions Group has called upon the expertise and know-how of VIDELIO – Cap'Ciné to provide the installation, initial operation and technical maintenance services to cover the entire event.
The goal is to install a pool of editing stations all connected to a centralized storage system, completed by assistant workstations to help with non-creative tasks such as content ingest, file imports, signal transcoding and other transfers.
The configuration installed included :
- 1x Avid ISIS 5500 with 32 Terabyte storage, 22 Terabytes usable capacity, therefore some 950 hours of video in XD Cam HD 50 format
- 5x Avid Media Composer Nitris DX editing stations
- 2x ingest stations for digitizing the various acquisition sources : video cassettes in HDV, DV and BetaCam standards, files in P2 and SxS formats.
- 2x transfer stations to feed the Outside Broadcast van and the Web streaming facility
- 1x encoding server to convert the files for Web streaming
The daily workload is covered by 3 technical staff who relay each other in turns for technical support and also assume the tasks of content ingest and the broadcast of completed programme subjects.
With the solution proposed, France Télévisions benefitted by a true post-production suite right inside the trade show venue. This allowed the journalists to gain time and work in a more serene environment.
The entire post-production chain is entirely managed on-site, as even the files for the France Télévisions's Group of Web sites are created and streamed from a single location.
The installation can be achieved in record time, not only because of the reliability of the equipment chosen, but also thanks to the experience of the VIDELIO – Cap'Ciné technical staff in this type of operation.
VIDELIO - Cap’Ciné has always risen to the expectations of the France Télévisions News division for the coverage of such a major event.
